The Kenyan government on Thursday, January 26, 2017, passed a bill that will see beer manufacturers compensate individuals who suffer damages from alcohol. According to the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act Bill proposed by Imenti Central MP, Gideon Mwiti,  manufacturers will put between five and ten percent of the revenue they generate in insurance companies for compensation. The bill also proposes that should a doctor confirms that certain damages such as death were caused as a result of drunkenness,  the manufacturer of the said beverage must compensate the affected person's family and dependants. Speaking at a press conference, one of the MP's described the bill as a 'win-win' for both consumers and manufacturers'. 'The Bill is a win-win for both consumers and manufacturers, the latter being  compelled to ensure their consumers are engaged in responsible drinking. Ghana’s Foreign Minister sworn in at Ethiopia embassy

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey had to be sworn in on Saturday at the country’s embassy in Ethiopia to assume her new role. This was due to failure to carry out the exercise in Accra. Ms Botchwey is part of newly appointed ministers of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who successfully went through vetting by the legislative. The other 12 ministers were sworn in Friday, January 27 at the Golden Jubilee House, until recently known as the Flagstaff House, the seat of government. Ms Botchwey could not swear in as a result of having to be in Addis Ababa for the African Union’s 28th Ordinary Session. She had to go ahead of the president’s delegation since she automatically becomes a member of the AU Executive Council as a Foreign Minister. The Council began its meetings on Thursday, January 26 ahead of the opening of the Session on Monday, January 30. Gov. El-Rufai to stop the use of Blackboard in Kaduna State Public Schools

Kaduna state Governor. Nasiru El-Rufa’i says the use of blackboards as teaching facility in public schools across the state would be stopped.  While speaking as the Chief Host at the 24th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Zaria Education Development Association held in Zaria, the governor who was represented by the state commissioner of education, professor Andrew Nok noted that  the measure was aimed at eliminating the hazard posed to teachers health.  The minister who noted that the government had already procured 5,000 Tablets for distribution to teachers in public schools,… added that 3 billion naira has been committed for infrastructural development in unity schools across the state.

Ser ena Williams has won her seventh Australian open title. in the 23rd Grand Slam singles title. The 35 year old who outclassed her sister Venus, in straight sets to win her seventh Australian Open, won 6-4 6-4 to pass Steffi Graf in the all-time list of major winners since the grand slam accepted professional players in 1968. Meanwhile Serena Williams has regained the number one ranking from German Angelique Kerber however Australia’s Margaret Court is the only player still ahead of Serena in terms of grand slam singles titles

Nigerian Navy on Operation River sweep in the Niger Delta

The Nigerian Navy has vowed to intensify its ‘Operation River Sweep’ in the Niger Delta to rid the region of criminal elements within the maritime environment. This was revealed by The Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Mohammed Garba, during the command’s medical outreach to Okunbiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state. Admiral Garba  who noted that the operation has been a success added that the Navy and other sister security organisations had successfully minimized criminal activities which include sea piracy among others.

Word leaders condemn Donald trump ban on Muslim refugees

World leaders   have condemned US President Donald Trump's measures against refugees and travelers from several Muslim-majority countries. The chorus of criticism came as passport holders from Arab countries were blocked today from passing through customs at US airports while several others were prevented from boarding US-bound planes. The temporal ban which took effect immediately, caused havoc and confusion for travelers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Meanwhile the United Nations refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration has called on the Trump administration to offer  asylum to people fleeing war and persecution, saying its resettlement programme is vital. It would be recalled that President Trump had on Friday the 27th of January 2017, signed an executive order that will curb immigration and the entry of refugees from some Muslim-majority countries
